Our Story

Meet the Founders

Construction runs in Brian Smith's blood. His grandfather built custom homes in McLean for high-profile political figures, and his great-grandfather managed major concrete projects in Washington, D.C., including several national landmarks.

Brian began his own career in insurance restoration after graduating from George Mason University. While he built a reputation for managing high volumes of work, he found the industry’s "assembly line" approach to be transactional and often thankless. In 2011, he established Total Build to focus on custom homes and large-scale renovations where he could prioritize craftsmanship and personal relationships.

Total Build Restoration represents a return to Brian's restoration roots, but with a different set of standards. Along with Nathan Tobler, who brings his own extensive background in restoration management, Brian recognized that the industry often prioritizes profit margins over the people who have actually suffered a loss.

Our approach is built on three core values: trust, quality, and communication. We have handled thousands of claims, from minor water leaks to large-scale fire damage. That experience has taught us that while the technical work is essential, the way we treat a homeowner during a crisis is what truly matters.

We are a local, independent restoration company by choice. We do not aim to be the largest restoration firm in the region; we aim to be the most reliable. By maintaining a manageable volume of projects, we ensure that our team can provide the attention to detail and advocacy our clients deserve.
